Actor Jack Taylor and director Guillermo de Oliveira will be honored at the 25th Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival – FANT – Audiovisual451

The Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival – FANT, which will celebrate its 25th edition from May 2 to 11, will award the FANTROBIA Award, which recognizes an emerging figure within the fantastic genre, Galician director and screenwriter Guillermo de Oliveira.

His first feature, the documentary ‘Unearthing Sad Hill’ was awarded the Noves Visions Best Film Award at the Sitges Film Festival and nominated for Best Documentary at the latest edition of the Goya Awards. He will receive the award at the FANT 25 closing gala, which will take place on May 10, at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

His feature film debut is the documentary ‘Unearthing Sad Hill’ (2018) in which he narrates the odyssey of a group of fans to rebuild the cemetery of the final sequence of Sergio Leone’s classic ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’. And it is that, in 1966, the Spanish army built a huge cemetery with more than 5,000 graves in the Mirandilla Valley, in Burgos, for the final scene of the movie “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. The place was completely abandoned after filming and for 49 years the vegetation covered the graves.

In October 2015, a group of fans of the film decided to start digging and under 10 centimeters of earth they found the original stone circle, in which the duel between Clint Eastwood (the good), Eli Wallach (the ugly) and Lee Van Cleef (the bad guy) looking for the grave that hides the $200,000, in Sad Hill Cemetery. For months people from all over Europe have traveled to this corner of Burgos to unearth and rebuild the place that Sergio Leone made mythical. ‘Unearthing Sad Hill’ is the result of recording that entire process, even before it began. The documentary will be screened as part of FANT 25, on May 9, at 6:00 p.m., at the Golem – Alhóndiga Cinemas.

With a degree in Audiovisual Communication and Journalism, Guillermo de Oliveira (Vigo, Pontevedra, 1986) has also participated in film directing and screenwriting workshops at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles (USA) and the EICTV in San Antonio de los Baths (Cuba). With his production company, Zapruder Pictures made his first short films in which he adapts video games to real image. Filmed in English, they accumulate nearly five million views on their YouTube channel: ‘Max Payne Valhalla’ (2012), ‘Modern Warfare: Sunrise’ (2013) or the award-winning ‘Red Dead Redemption: Seth’s Gold’ (2015) are some from them.

On the other hand, the 25th edition of the Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival will award its FANT of Honor to actor George Brown Randal, popularly known as Jack Taylor (Oregón, USA, 1936), the American face of Spanish horror and B-series movies of the 60s, 70s and 80s, star of mythical titles such as ‘The Mummy’s Revenge’ or ‘The Cursed Ship’. Born in the United States, he first settled in Mexico in the late 1950s and later arrived in Madrid in 1961, where he has appeared in dozens of movies, mostly horror.

Jack Taylor has worked with well-known Spanish horror film directors such as Jesús Franco, Amando de Ossorio, Javier Aguirre, León Klimovsky and José Ramón Larraz. He has shared the bill with many famous European horror stars such as Paul Naschy, Christopher Lee, Wolf Ruvinski, Germán Robles, Howard Vernon, Lina Romay, Helga Liné or María Rohm.

Within the FANT 25 program, the documentary ‘Jack Taylor, witness to the fantastic’ will be screened (2018) by Diego Lopez. Throughout an extensive interview, the actor reviews the biographical anecdotes and the films that made him an essential face of genre cinema. The documentary collects a valuable testimony in the first person about a life dedicated to the interpretation of the genre. The film will be screened on May 2 in the Sala BBK- Gran Vía at 8:00 p.m. and will be followed by a colloquium in which Diego López, Jack Taylor and Javier G. Romero, founder of Quatermass magazine and one of the from the promoters of the first edition of the Bilbao Fantastic Film Festival – FANT.

Jack Taylor will receive the festival’s tribute during this event, which will serve as the starting point for this special edition of FANT. At the end of this session, the Kafe Antzokia will host an inaugural concert with the Moonshine Wagon band –9:30 p.m.–. Admission to this inaugural party will be free until full capacity is reached. Doors open at 9:00 p.m.
