Actor Clint Eastwood has made a name for himself, not only as an actor but as a talented director. Notably, he also garnered a certain reputation as a director over the years that other actors have frequently commented on. However, it is a reputation that Eastwood shared that he did not particularly care for him.
Clint Eastwood doesn’t like the reputation that he only does ‘one take’
Many actors have spoken of the american sniper director’s habit of doing only one take during filming. But even though it’s a reputation that largely preceded it, Eastwood couldn’t help but feel like it wasn’t entirely accurate.
“Everyone keeps saying, ‘Well, he only does one take,'” Eastwood told Action Magazine (via DGA). “Even if that were true, I don’t like the reputation. I don’t think anyone likes that efficiency tag. What I like is to be efficient with the narration. For me, it’s whatever it takes to get the job done. I’m not out to save a dollar. We’ve budgeted a movie and it will live within budget, that’s for sure.”
For Eastwood, he didn’t film that way just to do it.
“The big question, for me, is how to make it so that it’s efficient for everyone, so that the actors can act their best and with the spontaneity that you’d like to find so that the audience feels like those lines have been said for the first time in the movie. story,” he continued. “Then you have a believable scene, then a group of believable scenes, and finally a believable image, because everyone thinks it looks real. It seems like they are saying it right away, instead of saying it for the fiftieth time.”
The actor also didn’t see much of a disparity between the shots.
“Other than obvious mistakes like forgetting a line, I often can’t see any difference between take one and take 20,” he added.
Clint Eastwood once called out Matt Damon for trying to break his strict rule
Damon found out the hard way that Eastwood doesn’t like to deviate from his one-take or two-take rule. In 2009, Damon and Eastwood collaborated for the sports drama. Unbeaten. In an interview with hot, the Bourne star shared what she found so intimidating about the role.
“Well, it was a bit scary because I was playing a South African, and that’s a very difficult accent to do,” he said. “If you think about what our language does in an American accent, it’s like the polar opposite in a South African accent.”
During filming, Damon decided to try his luck with Eastwood by requesting to do more than one take. But things didn’t go Damon’s way.
“I tested that theory on the first day of shooting. We did the first take, it came out pretty good, but Clint says, ‘Cut. Print. Check the door. Which means we’re going to move on,” Damon continued. “And I said, ‘Hey boss, maybe you think we can get one more?’ And he just turned around and said, ‘Why? Do you want to waste everyone’s time? I was like, ‘Okay, we’re done. Alright, let’s move on.’”
Why did Clint Eastwood switch from actor to director?
Eastwood had been curious about cinema from the earliest days of his career. When he starred in the classic western series Rawhide, the program gave him the opportunity to study a variety of different filmmakers.
“We had different directors every week. You have an idea of what people did. You saw people do things you liked and you saw people do things you didn’t particularly care about. Eventually, you had it in your brain. You said, ‘Well, if I ever did, I’d do it this way.’ Finally one day I said, I want to try it,” Eastwood said in an interview with No More WorkHorse.
The Oscar winner practiced making smaller videos like commercials before graduating to film.
“I came back to Universal for different management and said, ‘You know, I’d like to direct this movie.’ And they said, ‘Okay. As long as we don’t have to pay you, great. So I said, ‘Okay. I don’t think you should pay me,” she explained. “So, I was in the picture and established myself as an actor. That gave me the introduction to start doing it. And then I just have to like it.”
