The Death Of Superman has one of the best origin stories ever. The Superman writers and editors were at a story conference and Jerry Ordway suggested that they kill off Superman. This spawned one of the biggest storylines of the ’90s, one that would do exactly what it advertised: kill Superman.

Pitting Superman against Doomsday, the story did an amazing job of building tension and delivering blockbuster action. At first glance, it’s a great action piece, but it’s more than that; creative teams build a palpable sense of dread at all times. It’s also an amazing looking story, with great art that perfectly sells the action and excitement of the story.

KingdomCome, from writer Mark Waid and artist Alex Ross, is one of the best DC stories of the ’90s. Waid understands both Superman and the DC Universe and it shows on every page, and Ross does one of the best drawings of his career. Superman is the lynchpin of DC and this book proves why, presenting a deadly story with incredible art.

Along with artists Rags Morales, Andy Kubert, Ben Oliver and Travel Foreman, Morrison’s 19-issue series represented a new beginning for the Man of Steel in the New 52.

Morrison returned Superman to his Golden Age roots, turning him back into a man of the people and pitting him against a mind-boggling threat in a story only Morrison could pull off. It’s so underrated, but it’s a Superman story every fan should read.

Pitting Superman and his allies against his greatest villains, this story has it all.

Moore brings his trademark mature style to the whole thing, creating an epic unlike anything Superman readers have experienced up to that point. Swan’s illustrations gave the whole thing an old-school feel that still seemed new and vital. Even nearly forty years and several Superman reboots later, it’s still one of the best “last Superman” stories.
