Namor has fully shown his design in the latest trailer for Black Panther 2Y director Ryan Cooglerwanted to comment on it. Tenoch Huerta is the actor in charge of giving life to this character that we know from the comics, and whom many compare to Aquaman from DC, but Namor is not the leader of Atlantis here. Namor in this version is going to be the ruler of a kingdom called Tolacan, inspired by the Mayan culture, and created exclusively for the film. As for the actual design of the character physically, here we are going to tell you what the director said about it.
Ryan Coogler: “Namor’s design in Black Panther 2 has really unique characteristics”
Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, discussed the new trailer for the film with Entertainment Weekly. Above all, he commented on how the character of Namor is based on his version of the comic, but that he is not a carbon copy, and prefers to bet on strange things:
“I think by making these kinds of movies, you have to lean towards the weird stuffor you risk missing out on what makes them fun. It has really unique features and things that don’t necessarily go together. You can breathe underwater, obviously, but He has these little wings on his ankles. He has pointed ears and walks around in his underwear. It’s all fun, man.“
We already knew that Namor would have the ankle wings, but he really got a better look in the latest trailer, where he was also seen more in action, along with a look at his Talocan kingdom.
Talocán is a kingdom invented for the movie
According to the manager, Talocan is similar to Wakanda in having a long history, and that they are like El Dorado, societies hidden in plain sight. However, it is not an easy thing to design another advanced society with other cultures and traditions from the real world. In fact, brought back members from the first Black Panther movie to provide in the sequel a visual style that includes a change from spherical to anamorphic lenses. Coogler wanted to explain this:
“I think this film has the fog of loss about it, and the anamorphic lens warps the image a little bit. Sometimes when you go through a deep loss, it can warp the way you see the world.“.
Coogler also wanted to comment that although Talocan and Namor are something new for him, he is not very alien to the world of comics. The director commented that he already read comics when he was youngerbut he wasn’t fully involved in that world, and when he had more time, that’s when he really got involved.
As for Namor itself, we already know that Marvel Studios always chooses to adapt the comics, and not copy them, and keeping its design weird is an attempt to balance it out a bit with the comics. As he said himself, adding wings to his ankles and pointy ears adds a much-needed touch of fun.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on November 11.
