Monsters, Nazis, robot armor, Robin, Superman… escapism and fun

«I liked hanging with you again»

This is a reunion comic. The reunion between Damian and Jon. and the reunion between Thomas and the super children.

In recent years, Peter J Tomasi was the writer of one of the most appreciated collections with a member of the Superman family. Super children. In it and accompanied by patrick gleason we saw the dynamic and refreshing relationship between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne.

This is the very classic, from Don Quixote, a plot in which two main characters with different and opposing personalities are condemned to collaborate, understand each other and learn from each other.

The collection served to see that Jon Kent had enough entity and to have his own series. In Robin’s case, there was no question.

Jon grew older. Supersons closed. Thomas he left his characters. Life went on.

This special supposes the reunion. It sits between numbers one and two in the Superman collection. That puts us about half a year behind the current situation of both characters and a little before Jon’s famous coming out.

Superman

DC’s planning here slips a bit.

This reunion follows the return of Superman. Now we are two children. They are a child and a teenager.

This situation so rare, that would give for thousands of pages of interior monologue, Thomas se la ventilates are a couple of sentences. It locates us. already takes care Tom Taylor in the collection to delve into the adaptation of Jon.

We have not come here to dramatize, to show the tragedy of a young man who has lost his way with his reality, family and friends, in a crucial stage of life.

Superman

We have come here to have fun. This is a comic of adventure, escapism and fun.

The plot: Damian shows up at Jon’s house to tell him that the alarms have gone off in the fortress of solitude. The cause is that an extraterrestrial monster that Superman has in captivity to prevent its extinction, has escaped. Superman and Robin promise them very happily, but capturing the animal becomes more complicated as it increases in size. The story levels up with the appearance of a Nazi army that requires the use of spectacular robotic armor by the Superchildren.

It is a colorful, fun, popcorn adventure and little else. There is hardly any depth and drama. It is a celebration of reunion. A party.

Superman

The drawing of the Swiss of Serbian origin, Victor Bogdanović contributes to the frivolous atmosphere of the comic. His style reminds us of a Greg Capullo simpler, with traces of manga. A youthful drawing that can attract a certain audience. Dynamic, plastic but somewhat repetitive in postures and faces. The graphic section conveys the story well. It reflects well the antagonistic personalities of Damian and Jon but it does not transcend. It doesn’t improve the script. It is a mere transmission. A channel. In this case, the dance of inkers and colorists may harm you.

The comic is entertaining and very good to pass the time, despite the little relevance of the story and what it explains. There are hardly any subplots, double readings, or subtext.

Pure entertainment.

The best

• Fun, entertainment, monsters, Nazis, armor…
• The reunion of Thomas with the characters.

Worst

• Dance of inkers and colourists that weighs down the drawing.
• The timing of the special seems designed to avoid controversial issues.
