Copiapó, May 03, 2022.- Supporting families in the winter months with their paraffin, electricity and liquefied gas bills is the objective of a package of measures presented by President Gabriel Boric, together with the Minister of Energy Claudio Huepe , and Hacienda Mario Marcel, which include the presentation of a Bill that will inject resources into the Oil Price Stabilization Fund (FEPP), a Bill for the Stabilization of Electricity Accounts (PEC2), a Bill to increase competition in the gas market, especially for liquefied petroleum gas (gas at a fair price). In addition, the entry for immediate discussion of the Solid Biofuels Bill, which is in the second constitutional process, will be announced.
The Chile Supports plan has delivered concrete measures to support citizens in different areas, with an inclusive recovery plan. All these measures hope to relieve Chilean families to have basic services and fuel for cooking and heating at the lowest possible price.
“Our main focus of work is to improve the quality of life of people, and these measures precisely aim to reduce the gaps in access to energy, so that in this way, people have greater comfort, especially during the months of winter and that they also do it at a fair price”, declared the Energy SEREMI, Cecilia Sánchez Valenzuela.
During the announcement, in which President Boric was accompanied by the Ministers of Finance, Energy, and parliamentarians, he also signed “a bill that injects US$40 million into the oil price stabilization fund that will allow the price of of the paraffin.
In electricity, thanks to the proposed Bill, the electricity increases planned for this year will be stopped, if this mechanism did not exist. With regard to this initiative, the Minister of Energy, Claudio Huepe, stressed that “we are creating a new electricity price stabilization system to avoid sudden increases in electricity prices, thus we will maintain during 2022 most of the accounts of electricity frozen without increases and from 2023 begin the corresponding increases gradually so that they adapt to reality, but in a smooth and progressive way”.
Another topic presented was the price of gas. During the month of May, a Bill will be presented that seeks to solve the increase in the price of liquefied gas and competition in the market. The objective is that people can access gas at the lowest possible price.
In addition, as an immediate measure, the Ministry of Energy will start the pilot plan dependent on ENAP, which will start with 3,000 cylinders.
Minister Huepe pointed out that “the objective of the bill is to regulate the gas market, where what is relevant is that an organization will be established that will monitor competition from a regulatory perspective, through the National Energy Commission, which will allow Periodically analyze whether the prices at which gas is marketed are the lowest possible.
Regarding the Enap pilot, the Minister of Energy commented that “this pilot with Enap is only the beginning, since we hope to grow progressively with this project, maintaining safety and efficiency criteria.”
