The record for the Cannonball Run, the most illegal race in America, has been smashed – Car Magazine

Can you imagine trying to go as fast as possible from Santander to Tarifa? Or from Valencia to Lisbon… Well, that’s what several groups of people have been doing in the United States but from coast to coast in the so-called Cannonball Run. A trip of more than a day without stopping crossing states always at very high speeds and of course illegal whose clandestine record has been broken once again. For the fifth time, in seven weeks.

At the beginning of the confinement by the coronavirus a team managed to break the Cannonball Run record and it seems that the ban has been opened. All the debate about the morality of performing a Cannonball Run during a global pandemic seems to have been to no avail. Ed Bolian, who broke the record years ago, reports that the most illegal record in America has been broken seven times in the span of just five weeks.

According to Bolian, who has been in contact with the new record holders, the time to break is now less than 26 hours. A titanic 28-hour race was once unthinkable.

While the exact timing hasn’t been revealed, that frame of reference means the drivers would have had to reach an average speed of at least 172km/h for the 4,500km journey. Needing to stop to refuel, the team’s cruise and top speeds are likely to exceed that figure well.

Bolian claims the new record holders averaged 120 mph across the “multiple” states. It is unknown which car the new Cannonball Run record holders used. What is known is that they were well prepared, with more than 30 observers spread across the country, along with a heavily modified vehicle.

According to Bolian, not only has the record been broken, but the solo pilot, diesel, and coast-to-coast Cannonball records have fallen. This new flurry of record attempts follows a team of drivers taking advantage of the empty roads that had been created by the coronavirus lockdown to set a cross-country time of 26 hours and 38 minutes.

This unknown team used an Audi A8 for it, with large marine fuel tanks strapped into the trunk. The Cannonball Run is a simple and highly illegal record that, despite not having a governing body, is infamous within car culture.

Bolian is a former competitor, record holder, and is now a de facto judge on the record. To set a Cannonball Run record, you traditionally start at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan, then traverse across the United States as quickly as possible to finish at the Portofini Inn in Redondo Beach, California.

Modern technology and ultra-advanced equipment have caused the record to drop to levels unthinkable in recent years, with teams maintaining insane speeds on public roads to secure their place in automotive infamy.

The new record holders are reportedly preparing a documentary to accompany their official announcement.
